Class Sizes

As a former elementary teacher, I know first hand the importance of small class sizes in improving learning for students. I taught classes as large as 35 students and as small as 10 students.

There have been many studies over the years documenting the benefits of small class sizes, particularly at the elementary level. In 2004, Alberta began the Class Size Initiative but it was ended in 2018. The Class Size Initiative led to 2900 teachers be hired and rehired, but the program was ended in 2018. If reintroduced it would reduce by more than 50% the number of students in classes of 30 or more.

Further, reducing class sizes is an important safety step to reduce the spread of COVID.

“I support grade specific class size caps, and I will advocate for the reinstatement of the Class Size Initiative to reduce class sizes."
